World Cancer Day

World Cancer Day is an international day marked on February 4th to raise awareness of cancer and to encourage it’s prevention, detection, and treatment. World Cancer Day is a great day to contribute to. World Cancer Day was founded by the Union for International Cancer Control to support the goals of the World Cancer Declaration, written in 2008. The primary goal of the World Cancer Day is to significantly reduce illness and death caused by cancer by 2020. World Cancer Day targets misinformation, raises awareness, and reduces stigma. Multiple initiatives run on World Cancer Day to show support for those affected by cancer.

With World Cancer Day fast approaching, we got together as a team on the 2nd February to fundraise for our charity partner, we had great fun – Cancer Research UK. The local shop in Gerrard’s Cross rely on volunteers to donate time and items for sale, and so we donated our time to help fundraise. We were set up in an area just outside Tesco in pairs, and were tasked with raising as much money as possible. The key was to remain engaging and happy despite the freezing temperatures and raise money from the people in Gerrards Cross.

By the end of our shifts, we managed to raise in excess of £195 in just 4 hours. It was great to see the team all dressed up in bright colours and wigs, talking with our local community about what we were doing. We were so happy to see how many local people were willing to help out, and many also shared stories of their own about how cancer had affected their lives.
